Hannah’s Thanksgiving Prayer and Rejoicing in the Lord

This prayer was almost a victory song and dance (v1). The enemies were defeated (v3,4). It was prayed from a thankful heart after prevailing against high odds. Her barrenness was no more. The curse was no more. There was no fanfare needed from a rejoicing heart to burst out in a melody to the Lord (v1). Did I mention “melody”? Why? You can almost sing along those beautiful lines. These verses became contemporary praise and worship songs.

Do we have a song in our hearts? A spontaneous one? For all seasons and circumstances? The Old to the New Testament has passages to this effect. Life is not easy, but lives are not lived through with ease all the time. There will be the occasional blips that required us to give thanks, sing and dance through it.

Paul encouraged us in, “speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord,” (Eph 5:19) and “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. (Col 3:16). The Psalmist broke into songs on many occasions, “Oh, sing to the Lord a new song! Sing to the Lord, all the earth.” (Psalm 96:1)

Her strength had returned and so had her power. The garment of praise has replaced  the death robe. Those that had experienced God will no longer be in bondage of fear and the unknown. Surely, they can smile at the storm. Can we envision that the ability to rejoice and sing is a measure of our growing faith in God as we experienced His goodness and blessings?

God is unchanging; no one is like Him. He is holy and we are not. (v2) Is there someone that is like God? None at all. So, what did we learn from this life experience of Hannah, becoming a mother through an answered prayer? What we are not and cannot be, we can rely on Him to become as long as we humble ourselves (v4-9).

1 Samuel 2:1-4

1 And Hannah prayed and said:
“My heart rejoices in the LORD;
My horn is exalted in the LORD.
I smile at my enemies,
Because I rejoice in Your salvation.

2 “No one is holy like the LORD,
For there is none besides You,
Nor is there any rock like our God.

3 “Talk no more so very proudly;
Let no arrogance come from your mouth,
For the LORD is the God of knowledge;
And by Him actions are weighed.

4 “The bows of the mighty men are broken,
And those who stumbled are girded with strength.
